Year 6-Jupiter
Welcome to Jupiter's Class Page
Teacher: Mr Hurrell
LSA: Mrs C Jackson
In Jupiter, we are hard-working, supportive and resilient learners. We strive to develop our growth mind-sets to ensure we always do our best. Our classroom is a positive, respectful and enjoyable place to be.
Things to remember:
PE days are Monday and Tuesday. Children to arrive in school wearing 'active wear'.
Daily equipment - water bottle (no metal please), reading record and reading books. Please ensure your child is reading a book that is appropriate for them- this is always recorded in their reading record. If not, please ask your class teacher.
English
In English this term our class book is 'When the Sky Falls'. This brilliant book is set in WW2 and explores the challenges of a young boy called Joseph who finds himself living and working at a neglected zoo in London. Children will not only experience a fantastic read, they will also learn about what life was like in WW2 which links to our history unit.
Children bring their reading records home each day to record their reading at home. Spellings are given out each week and are tested on a Monday.
Maths
In the first term, we are starting the year - as we always do - with Place Value and the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). These skills are the foundations of each child's understanding of mathematics and is therefore recapped and developed upon each year.
The second half term will see the children develop their understanding of fractions. We will begin with recapping equivalent fractions then moving onto addition and subtraction of fractions with the same and different denominators. Finally, we will move onto multiplying and dividing fractions, which sounds harder than it actually is. Promise.
Science
Our science topics this term is the Circulatory system. In this unit, children will have the once in a life time (likely) experience of dissecting a heart. This really is a fantastic lesson which has historically engaged all children in the learning - even those children that are a little apprehensive at first. Additionally, children will be learning about the function of blood and blood vessels within a human body.
The children will work scientifically by:
- Planning and conducting investigations
- Making predictions
- Record their results
- Evaluating their findings
Geography
In Geography this term, pupils will be exploring maps. Children will revisit prior learning and knowledge about maps and our earth, while also learning about time zones and lines of longitude and latitude along with other key features of map work.
Homework
Homework is set weekly on Mondays and is due on Fridays. Homework provides the opportunity for children to develop their organisational skills as independent learners. Homework consists of short maths and grammar tasks, which consolidate that week's learning, weekly spelling practice and regular reading.
